From Lego Toys to CAD: An Architect Finds His Stride with Landscape Visualization

Jonathan Reeves Architecture, led by RIBA Chartered Architect Jonathan Reeves, combines architecture, 3D modeling and training services. The firm was commissioned to produce high‑definition 3D visualizations and short animations for season three of the UK TV show Love Your Garden, facing tight turnaround times, frequent design changes and a variety of challenging sites (accessible gardens, steep slopes and complex plant schemes) that required about 30–40 second animations at 25 fps (≈750–1,000 frames) per project.

Reeves used Vectorworks Architect and Landmark to quickly build accurate, scaled garden models, Renderworks for test renders and Artlantis Studio for final HD animations, employing tools like the Heliodon, Landscape Area, freeform/NURBS and Repetitive Unit to model lighting, plantings, ponds and terraces. The workflow met weekly deadlines, accommodated revisions smoothly, clearly communicated design intent for production approval, enhanced the show’s visuals across all episodes (including a complex Cumbria garden) and helped reinforce Reeves’ practice and BIM training work.
