Energy-Efficient Ideas and Disaster Prevention Revive Japan’s Kyushu Region

SUEP., a Tokyo-based architecture firm founded by Yoko Suemitsu (joined by co-chair Hirokazu Suemitsu), is known for organic, nature-inspired designs and a string of awards. The firm was commissioned to design a combined Ureshino-City cultural center and Shiota junior high in Kyushu to help revive a depopulating area — a site located on a flood-prone delta whose vulnerability became especially critical after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

SUEP. integrated disaster-prevention and energy-efficient measures into the design, using Vectorworks with the SimTread plug-in plus wind and thermal simulations to model evacuation, airflow and performance. Their solution places buildings on raised floors with surrounding green space, employs natural air conditioning and tree‑canopy rooflines for shade, and specifies robust structural materials; the resulting plans deliver a 4,771 m² cultural center (1,000- and 500-person halls) and a 7,618 m² junior high with classrooms and sports facilities — a resilient, sustainable design intended to boost visitation and revitalize the community.
