Delivering Better Buildings: The Race to BIM

The Design Büro, a Warwickshire‑based architectural practice founded in 1991 that specializes in health and social care facilities, faced the UK government’s 2016 mandate requiring Building Information Modeling (BIM) on all public projects. Because much of their work is government‑funded, adopting a robust BIM workflow was essential to remain competitive while continuing to deliver patient‑focused, sustainable designs.

They upgraded to Vectorworks Architect, tested workflows on the Tamarind Centre and then moved to full BIM on the Pathology building for Ysbyty Glan Clywd, using IFC to ensure interoperability with other platforms and Solibri for model QA. The firm formalized BIM protocols, trained staff, and now runs all new projects via BIM, achieving faster, higher‑quality outputs, better collaboration (including offsite precast fabrication), and measurable gains in cost, speed, and health & safety.
