David Lee Lights Up Madison Square Garden for One Direction

Lightscape Design, led by British lighting designer David Lee, was hired to create the lighting for One Direction’s first headlining show at Madison Square Garden. The project posed tight constraints: the design had to be built around an 80' x 30' video screen, installed within a single 8 a.m.–6 p.m. day, and developed in just three weeks while coordinating between U.K. and U.S. teams.

Lee used Vectorworks Spotlight to produce precise 2D and 3D plans, measurements, and installation paperwork, and selected compact, powerful fixtures to preserve sightlines and speed rigging. By emailing detailed drawings to the production crew and streamlining the design for fast installation, the team finished on schedule, the lighting complemented the sold-out show, and the setup went off without surprises.
