Advancing the Power of Play with BIM

Architecture Is Fun, a Chicago studio led by Peter and Sharon Exley, creates playful, learning-focused environments for children and families. Confronted with a shortage of quality, engaging child-centered spaces—and frequent site constraints and tight budgets—the firm set out to elevate everyday places by making them participatory, accessible, and meaningful for both kids and adults.

They deploy an "Educative Design" process that involves teachers, children, and artists, and rely on Vectorworks BIM to produce data-rich 3D models, prototype components (including 3D printing), and coordinate with consultants. The result: reclaimed and enlivened spaces—from a gothic garden play area at St. Chrysostom’s to the multi-gallery Young At Art and the Frost Art Museum family gallery—better project coordination, lifecycle value and efficiencies, and stronger client and community engagement.
