Siemens Elin-EBG (ELIN EBG Traction GmbH), a Siemens subsidiary that supplies state‑of‑the‑art traction equipment for rail vehicles, needed to certify its ELTAS (ELIN Traction Automation System) software to the IEC‑61508 international functional safety standard. ELTAS components can act as vehicle or traction control units, so rigorous unit testing and traceable safety evidence were required.

VectorCAST/C++ provided an intuitive interface and an integrated environment to create, execute and review unit tests and code coverage, improving on the commercial tools previously used. ELIN has relied on VectorCAST products (C++, RSP, MCDC) since 2007 to support ELTAS testing and IEC‑61508 certification.
