Case Study: NHL transforms media operations and archive discovery with VAST Data

A VAST Data Case Study

Preview of the NHL Case Study

The NHL and VAST Data – Five Years of Co-Innovation

The National Hockey League (NHL) needed a modern data platform to manage, store, and distribute its massive and growing archive of media content, including live games and historical footage. They sought a solution that would not only preserve their legacy but also serve as a foundation for future innovation and production workflows. They partnered with VAST Data, which co-developed the required SMB protocol to meet the NHL's specific needs.

VAST Data implemented its Data Platform across the NHL's operations, successfully migrating over 20 petabytes of archival data and deploying systems in all 32 NHL arenas. This enabled real-time replication of game footage and created a highly accessible content platform. The solution safeguarded the league's history, dramatically accelerated post-production workflows, and set the stage for AI-powered content discovery and metadata tagging, all at less than half the cost of traditional all-flash storage.
