Telia used Varnish Enterprise to create its next-generation CDN

Telia Company, a leading Nordic and Baltic telecommunications provider, needed to replace an end-of-life CDN while preparing for rapid growth in video streaming and unpredictable traffic peaks. The challenge was to build a future-proof, pop-based CDN on standard COTS hardware that could scale for scheduled and unexpected high-demand events while maximizing per-server performance and stability.

Telia partnered with Varnish Enterprise to deploy a predominantly large-node, centralized CDN using Varnish with custom in‑core TLS, validated in lab tests at target line rates (~150 Gbit/s per server). The implementation delivered doubled per-server capacity, stable production performance, fewer on-prem servers and reduced reliance on cloud CDN, and enabled consolidation of multiple CDN solutions—driving scalability and operational cost savings across Telia’s streaming services.
