Volvo Cars, working with Varjo and its Varjo XR-1 mixed reality headset, needed a better way to evaluate future vehicle designs and UX concepts before the cars were built. Their challenge was to test exterior proportions, interior fit and finish, and digital concepts in realistic driving conditions without the time and cost of traditional tooling changes.

Varjo enabled Volvo Cars to run mixed reality test drives in a real Volvo XC90, blending virtual elements into the real road environment with high realism and low latency. The result was faster iteration, more trustworthy design and UX evaluations, and significant cost and time savings, with Volvo saying tasks that normally took weeks could be done in a day.
