Volvo Cars partnered with Varjo to solve the challenge of evaluating future car designs and UX concepts before vehicles were built. Using the Varjo XR-1 mixed reality headset, Volvo’s designers and engineers could visualize photorealistic virtual elements inside a real car and assess fit, finish, proportions, and driver experience with far greater realism.

Varjo’s mixed reality solution let Volvo Cars run design and UX studies in real-world driving conditions, including test drives on actual roads, while replacing only the elements under evaluation. The result was faster iteration, fewer tool and software changes, and significant cost savings—work that would normally take weeks could be done in a day. Volvo also gained more trustworthy user research through integrated eye tracking and unprecedented realism.
