How National Highways Improves Road Safety Using Varjo Mixed Reality

National Highways, the UK government company responsible for England’s motorways and major A roads, needed a cost-effective way to train Traffic Officers for high-pressure, hard-to-replicate driving scenarios without disrupting public roads. Together with Varjo and VR solutions provider MXT, they explored a mixed reality approach using the Varjo XR-3 headset to help officers practice advanced maneuvers and emergency responses in a realistic setting.

Varjo’s XR-3 is being used in MXT’s custom mixed reality driving simulator, which combines a motion rig, immersive sound, and realistic vehicle controls to recreate National Highways’ Traffic Officer Vehicle and a wide range of road conditions. The result is a highly immersive, flexible, and scalable training tool that can simulate scenarios such as overturned lorries, heavy traffic, and adverse weather, improving realism and training effectiveness while reducing the need for costly real-world exercises.
