How Lufthansa Aviation Training Accelerates Commercial Pilot Training With XR

Lufthansa Aviation Training, the flight academy subsidiary of Lufthansa, needed a way to increase pilot training volume and frequency while reducing reliance on scarce aircraft, instructors, weather-dependent flight time, and high operating costs. To address this, they partnered with Varjo and BRUNNER, using Varjo’s XR headset in a mixed reality flight training setup.

Varjo and BRUNNER implemented the NovaSim MR DA42 simulator, which combines a real cockpit with Varjo mixed reality to deliver a 360-degree virtual environment and high-clarity passthrough for hands-on training. The result was a more immersive and effective training experience that Lufthansa Aviation Training says can help pilots progress faster, train year-round, lower costs, and reduce environmental impact, with the system now moving through certification.
