A Varjo Case Study
Fortum, one of the largest power generation companies in the Nordics, needed a more effective way to validate nuclear control room designs and train operators in a safety-critical environment. Traditional physical simulators were costly, slow to change, and limited in availability, while existing VR headsets lacked the resolution needed to read manuals and control-room displays clearly. Varjo’s high-fidelity VR headset was used to address these challenges.
With Varjo’s human-eye-resolution VR, Fortum eSite built a dedicated virtual training room for Loviisa plant operators, enabling realistic operator training and early design validation months ahead of physical implementation. The solution cut simulator costs to about one-tenth of a physical simulator, helped save thousands of working hours and potentially hundreds of thousands of euros, and improved training realism with features like eye tracking and simulated stress factors such as fire, smoke, flood, and earthquakes.
