Boeing enables astronauts to train for 100s of hours in VR with Varjo

The customer Boeing faced the challenge of training astronauts for complex, safety-critical procedures like docking with the International Space Station using virtual reality. Existing VR devices lacked the necessary resolution, preventing astronauts from reading mission-critical console displays from a normal distance, which made effective training impossible.

The vendor Varjo provided its human-eye resolution VR headset, the XR-1, which allowed astronauts to clearly read all console displays while operating the simulated spacecraft. This solution enabled Boeing to conduct full mission training—from launch to docking to landing—entirely in VR for the first time, resulting in hundreds of banked training hours for the crew and providing the operational benefit of allowing astronauts to train remotely from anywhere in the world.
