A Valtech Case Study
Ford Motor Company, a major mobility manufacturer, faced the challenge of making urban package deliveries more efficient and environmentally friendly, as traditional delivery vans struggled with city congestion and created a large carbon footprint. They engaged the vendor Valtech to design a better last-mile delivery service.
Valtech implemented a multi-modal delivery system that uses vans as mobile hubs, coordinating with couriers on e-bikes and on foot via a proprietary algorithm called MoDe:Link. The solution included iOS and web applications for couriers and managers, as well as a smart jacket for gesture-based controls. This system tripled delivery efficiency in a trial, allowing two vans to deliver the same number of packages as six conventional vans. In another trial with Royal Mail, van usage was reduced by 50% and daily vehicle mileage decreased by 33%, significantly cutting carbon emissions.
