Stora Enso boosts board quality with Valmet’s ceramic press roll covers in a 2020 optimization project

Stora Enso's Beihai mill in Guangxi faced a challenge in improving the surface quality of its high-end liquid packaging board to meet stringent customer requirements. Specific goals included improving the sheet peeling effect, the IGT index, interlayer bonding, and surface smoothness. To address this, the mill partnered with Valmet on a press section optimization project.

The solution involved Valmet upgrading the original rubber press roll covers to ceramic ones on the paper machine. Following a collaborative project, the ceramic cover was successfully installed. The results were excellent, with the Valmet solution enabling all tested product types to meet production targets. The upgrade improved product bulk, smoothness, and bonding strength, while also providing a wider operating window for the calendar.
