Smurfit Kappa boosts pulp yield and cuts chemical use with Valmet at Piteå mill

Smurfit Kappa, a major kraftliner producer, sought to improve pulp quality and increase yield from its wood raw material at its mill in Piteå, Sweden. To achieve this, the company partnered with vendor Valmet for a major rebuild project that involved the latest continuous cooking technology, including the new ImpBin impregnation vessel.

Valmet implemented a complex solution that consolidated three digesters into two and introduced its innovative ImpBin technology and a new pressure diffuser. The results were exceptional, with the startup being the smoothest in the technical manager's 30-year career. Valmet's work led to excellent pulp quality, exceeded yield targets, and reductions in both chemical consumption and energy costs for the customer.
