A Valmet Case Study
SCA Ortviken, a Swedish pulp mill, faced the challenge of adapting to decreased global demand for newsprint and magazine paper. To do this, they decided to shut down that production and convert their facility to focus on producing chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP). They partnered with the vendor Valmet for this major conversion project, which included a rebuild of the production line and a new flash drying and baling system.
Valmet implemented a solution that rebuilt an existing TMP line into a high-temperature CTMP (HT-CTMP) line and installed a new energy-efficient Valmet Fiber Flash Dryer system and baling line. The project was successfully started up, with the first bale produced in December 2022 and the lines taken over in early 2023. The conversion has allowed SCA Ortviken to triple its CTMP production capacity to 300,000 tonnes per year, attracting new customers and receiving a positive response for its new high-quality pulp product.
