SCA doubles pulp capacity to 900,000 tonnes with Valmet

SCA, a Swedish forestry company, faced the challenge of doubling the production capacity of its Östrand pulp mill without disturbing the existing mill's operations and without any serious accidents. This massive undertaking, named Project Helios, involved nine sub-projects and 7,900 people. To achieve this, SCA partnered with Valmet to implement a key technology solution.

Valmet supplied and implemented its cooking plant, fiberline, and evaporation technologies, which included the world's largest softwood digester. The solution resulted in the successful startup of the world's largest softwood pulp line, completed on budget and on time. The mill's capacity doubled to 900,000 tonnes of pulp per year, with the new evaporation plant noted as the world's most energy-efficient. The project was also completed without any serious accidents.
