Sappi cuts grinder energy use by 300 kWh/T with Valmet

Sappi, a major pulp and paper producer, sought to improve the performance of its grinders at its Ngodwana mill. The challenge was to enhance pulp quality and reduce energy consumption. To address this, Sappi partnered with vendor Valmet to utilize its innovative Galileo grinding technology.

The solution implemented by Valmet involved replacing conventional pulp stones with steel cores featuring unique diamond-coated grinding surfaces. Despite Covid-19 travel restrictions halting the final installations, Valmet utilized remote support and HoloLens technology to successfully complete the project on time and within budget. The results were significant, including a reduction in grinder energy consumption of approximately 300 kWh per ton and a decrease in the use of expensive furnish materials. Valmet's solution successfully helped Sappi lower production costs and achieve superior pulp quality.
