Sappi Alfeld, a specialty paper mill in Germany, faced a challenge in reducing high levels of winding broke on its PM 2 machine. This issue was impacting production efficiency and profitability, especially given their strict quality standards that required perfect roll appearance and profiles. To tackle this, they worked with vendor Valmet, initially utilizing manual optimization and the iRoll Portable analysis service.

The solution involved Valmet implementing its iRoll Reel technology with a soft reel drum cover and integrating it with the Valmet IQ CD Controls multivariable profile control system. This provided online hardness profile measurement and allowed for optimized control strategies for each paper grade. As a result, Sappi Alfeld achieved an 80% reduction in winding broke, which significantly improved the production line's profitability and material efficiency while maintaining high speed and top product quality.
