PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk (TPL) faced the challenge of replacing its obsolete distributed control system (DCS) for its pulp mill operations without a production shutdown and under a tight schedule, further complicated by pandemic travel restrictions. The vendor, Valmet, provided its Valmet DNA automation system and remote support services to overcome this challenge.

Valmet implemented a pioneering remote commissioning solution. Their engineers used live audio and video tools to supervise TPL's personnel on-site, who installed new cabinets with 650 I/Os in just two days and migrated controls without interruption. The solution was a success, resulting in no disruption to mill processes during the switchover and excellent performance from the new Valmet DNA automation system.
