A Valmet Case Study
Metsä Group contacted Valmet to develop a solution for increasing its self-sufficiency in chemicals at its Äänekoski Bioproduct mill. The challenge was to find a new way to produce sulfuric acid from the mill's own chemical circulation, specifically by utilizing the sulfur compounds found in the odorous gases from the pulp manufacturing process.
Valmet developed and supplied a new sulfuric acid plant from scratch, a technological solution that processes these odorous gases into sulfuric acid. This innovative plant allows the mill to close its chemical circulation and improves its environmental performance. Valmet's solution was part of a larger key technology delivery to the next-generation mill, which included highly energy-efficient equipment designed to maximize bioenergy use.
