Metsä Fibre builds 1.5 million-tonne bioproduct mill with Valmet

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, faced the challenge of replacing an old pulp mill and meeting the growing demand for softwood pulp. To address this, they partnered with technology vendor Valmet to build a new, state-of-the-art bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland, requiring a commitment to safety, schedule, and the best available technology.

Valmet implemented a complete solution, supplying all main process islands and a mill-wide automation system. This included wood handling, a fiber line, a recovery boiler, and innovative systems like a fossil-free lime kiln and a sulfuric acid plant that utilizes the mill's own odorous gases. The result is a highly efficient, fossil fuel-free mill with minimized emissions, low water consumption, and high operational safety. Valmet's delivery is expected to have a significant employment impact of around 800 man-years.
