The customer, Mercer Rosenthal, sought to improve the energy efficiency of its continuous cooking plant to reduce operating costs. Valmet provided its Exergy Pre-Evaporator technology to address this challenge.

Valmet's solution involved integrating the pre-evaporator into the digester area, where it uses medium-pressure steam to evaporate black liquor. This process improved the mill's energy and water efficiency by reducing the load on the evaporation plant and lowering low-pressure steam demand. The results included significant operational cost savings, corresponding to about 40% of the steam cost for the digester, and a successful start-up achieved in less than three days.
