Irving Pulp and Paper boosts pulp output 50 tonnes/day with Valmet

Irving Pulp and Paper, a pulp mill in Saint John, New Brunswick, faced the challenge of modernizing its operation to achieve significant returns through increased capacity, higher yield, operational flexibility for different wood types, and reduced maintenance and operating costs. To address this, they partnered with vendor Valmet to implement a new continuous pulping line.

Valmet implemented its CompactCooking technology, which replaced 14 batch digesters with a new continuous digester. The results were exceptional, with the project finishing on schedule and 10% under budget. The solution led to a production increase of 50 tonnes per day, a 15-20% reduction in bleaching chemicals, and lower energy consumption, saving 80,000 tonnes of biomass per year. Valmet's solution also improved pulp quality and reduced millwide maintenance costs.
