Domtar boosts pulp production 5% with Valmet's LignoBoost

The customer Domtar faced the challenge of needing to convert a low-value stream, black liquor from their kraft pulping process, into a potential revenue source at their Plymouth, NC mill. To address this, they worked with the vendor Valmet to implement its LignoBoost lignin extraction system.

Valmet's solution was the installation of a LignoBoost plant, which successfully extracts high-quality lignin. This allowed Domtar to off-load its recovery boiler, resulting in a 5% increase in pulp production capacity. The extracted lignin itself became a new product, marketed as BioChoice™, which can be sold as a renewable biofuel or bio-material, creating a new revenue stream.
