A Valmet Case Study

Preview of the CMPC Brazil Case Study

CMPC Brazil increases pulp capacity 18% with Valmet

CMPC Brazil, a major pulp and paper producer, undertook a strategic project to modernize and increase the capacity of its Guaíba mill line II while also improving its environmental sustainability. The challenge was to execute this complex upgrade, which included automation system improvements and new process equipment, during normal mill operations without disrupting production. Valmet served as a key partner for the automation and process deliveries.

Valmet implemented a comprehensive solution that included a new recovery boiler, upgrades to multiple process areas like wood handling and pulp drying, and an advanced automation system with new controls. The project was completed on schedule and within budget, resulting in an 18% increase in production capacity and making the mill one of the most sustainable in Brazil. The new nominal capacity was reached just 113 days after start-up. The project's excellence was globally recognized when it was awarded the PMI Project of the Year 2024.
