Cartones Ponderosa cuts coating weight by 4 g/m² with Valmet

Cartones Ponderosa, a leading Mexican producer of coated folding boxboard, faced the challenge of needing a smoother board surface for better printing properties while also requiring an increase in machine speed and a reduction in operating costs to remain competitive. They partnered with vendor Valmet to address these challenges with a rebuild of their board machine.

Valmet implemented a solution featuring an OptiCoat Layer curtain coating station and OptiDry Vertical air impingement drying technology. This required only seven days of downtime. The results included a more uniform coating that increased opacity and smoothness while reducing the total coating weight applied, saving an estimated 2,700 tons of coating material annually. Valmet's solution also enabled an immediate 18% increase in machine speed, significantly boosting productivity.
