Case Study: NASA connects global student teams to tackle epic space challenges with Valamis

Epic problem solving in a global learning environment

NASA sought to modernize its global Epic Challenge program to attract top graduating engineers and connect student teams and subject-matter experts across continents, devices, and time zones. To scale a fun, engaging, and accessible digital learning environment that supports informal and formal learning and new pedagogies, NASA selected Valamis and its Learning Experience Platform to renew and expand the Epic Challenge program.

Valamis implemented a cloud-based Learning Experience Platform using xAPI and an LRS to capture informal, social and real-world learning, enable powerful analytics, and support phenomenon-based and interdisciplinary collaboration. As a result, multi-national teams now work virtually on problems like sustainable human habitation of Mars with continuous curation and effortless learning authentication; the platform also supported workforce development and research benchmarking—producing over 100 student concepts and 3 student start-ups in Epic Challenge Finland 2015–2016.
