PD Leverages Portable Tech To Effectively Fight A Rash of Property Crime

Los Gatos Police faced a rising wave of downtown auto burglaries that strained their small, residential department and traditional patrol resources. To bolster detection and evidence collection without relying on fixed networks or heavy infrastructure, the department adopted V5 Systems’ portable solution suite, including the OnSight Portable License Plate Reader, OnSight Portable Surveillance Unit with Video Streaming, V5 Solar Panels and the OnPower Portable Auxiliary Power Unit.

V5 Systems’ preconfigured, solar-powered OnSight units delivered mobile LPR and live video streaming that could be deployed in under 30 minutes, enabling investigators to identify nearly a dozen suspects, pinpoint five suspect vehicles in one month and secure two arrest warrants; the case summary notes 12 suspects apprehended. The technology let officers run plates through DMV records, share data with neighboring jurisdictions and close cases without risky confrontations, restoring public confidence while preserving limited patrol resources.
