Watson News, a Swiss online news portal, faced significant challenges in moderating the high volume of reader comments on its platform. Their existing approach, which combined a simple word-filtering bot and a large team of human moderators, was inefficient and inconsistent. This led to inappropriate comments being published, acceptable comments being delayed, rising costs, and decreased reader engagement. They sought a better solution from vendor Utopia Analytics.

Utopia Analytics implemented its AI Moderator solution, training a custom model on Watson News's historical moderation data. The solution was integrated via an API. During the process, Utopia also identified and helped address inconsistencies in the customer's human moderation standards. The results were highly successful: Utopia's AI now catches 2 to 2.5 times more inappropriate comments, improves discussion quality, and publishes acceptable comments in real time. Most notably, Utopia's solution reduced Watson News's manual moderation effort by 50%, delivering major cost savings and operational efficiency.
