OpenStreetMap's Lake Monitoring Initiative Enhancing Flood Resilience in Indonesia

OpenStreetMap undertook a challenge in Indonesia to monitor lakes and improve flood resilience in the city of Bandung, which was under threat from climate change and rapid urbanization. To harness community engagement for this effort, they partnered with the vendor Ushahidi, utilizing its mobile app for data collection.

Using the Ushahidi platform, OpenStreetMap trained a team of volunteers who successfully mapped 170 lakes nationwide. In a separate urban security initiative in Bandung, volunteers were onboarded in just three hours and collected 263 data points in five days. The project's significant impact led to plans for expanded data collection with Indonesian government agencies.
