Invisible City - Customer Case Study

Invisible City, a research project by Western Sydney University, sought to understand how young people in Parramatta, Sydney, emotionally experience their city to better inform urban renewal plans. Their challenge was to find a way to capture and map these subjective feelings. They partnered with the vendor Ushahidi to utilize its platform for data collection and visualization.

Ushahidi deployed its platform for the university, configuring a custom reporting form and SMS functionality to gather data directly from youths' mobile phones. They also created a custom data visualization to show emotion density on a map. As a result, the project successfully mapped over 280 emotion reports. These findings were presented in a public exhibition, and the university made Ushahidi's software customizations open source for other global researchers.
