Empowering Tana River County Communities through Inclusive Climate Action

The Tana River County government in Kenya faced the challenge of building climate resilience in a region severely impacted by recurrent droughts and floods. To develop effective, community-driven strategies, they partnered with the vendor Ushahidi to implement a data collection solution using its low-tech Platform, which utilized SMS and WhatsApp.

Ushahidi's solution leveraged accessible, zero-rated communication channels to gather insights from over 4,000 residents. This inclusive, participatory approach empowered the community and provided the data needed to co-create actionable climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, which were then integrated into the county's official policy and budgeting frameworks.
