Bridging Gender Disparity with Climate Resilience using Citizen-generated Data in Yumbe District

The Yumbe District in Northern Uganda faced escalating climate risks like drought and flooding, which exacerbated existing gender inequalities and led to increased domestic violence and resource scarcity. To tackle this, they partnered with Ushahidi to implement a data-driven solution using its crowdsourcing platform for citizen-generated data.

Ushahidi’s solution involved deploying its low-tech platform to collect community insights via SMS and WhatsApp, engaging a significant number of women respondents. This participatory approach helped identify critical needs, such as for clean stoves and safer water points, and informed inclusive climate action policies. The project successfully amplified women's voices in decision-making, influenced district-level plans, and provided measurable evidence for gender-sensitive interventions.
