A customized memorial website built to gather the names of those lost in conflicts in South Sudan and preserve their legacy

The World Peace Foundation, in collaboration with civil society volunteers, faced the challenge of honoring the countless victims of conflict in South Sudan. An official death toll did not exist, making it impossible to ascertain the full human impact of the violence or create a memorial. They partnered with Ushahidi to build a platform that could respectfully gather and display the names of the lost.

Ushahidi implemented a customized memorialization website built on its data collection platform. The solution included a minimalistic design, multiple methods for submitting testimonials (web, SMS, email, Twitter), and interactive data visualizations. The Ushahidi team provided critical technical expertise and training, enabling the volunteers to more easily manage and verify names. This created a powerful, accessible database to raise awareness of the conflict's human toll and aid in the healing and reconciliation process.
