The New Mexico Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) required a tool to better simulate reality in order to develop strategies for reducing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. To meet this challenge, they turned to UrbanSim for its scenario modeling capabilities to create an integrated land use, transportation, and economic development modeling toolkit.

UrbanSim implemented a solution where three distinct scenarios were developed: a trend scenario, an 'emerging lifestyles' scenario, and a 'jobs/housing balance' scenario. This approach allowed MRCOG to effectively plan for alternative futures by modeling the impacts of different land use policies and transportation system investments to address climate change.
