Predicting Traffic Patterns for Operational and Planning Excellence for the Provincial Government of British Columbia

TRANBC engaged UrbanLogiq to develop a proof-of-concept SaaS analytics and visualization platform to ingest and harmonize provincial traffic datasets (TRADAS, DriveBC, VSLS and Telecommunications Service Provider data). The challenge was to turn sparse, heterogeneous sensor and event data into actionable insights for both tactical operations and strategic planning, and to predict traffic volumes and speeds while accounting for incidents, road conditions and seasonal sensor gaps.

UrbanLogiq built a cloud-hosted PoC on AWS that aggregated multi-source data, delivered geospatial visualizations and reporting, and trained a neural network to predict traffic speed and volume. The solution demonstrated measurable impact: UrbanLogiq’s model produced average prediction errors of 0.598% for speed and 20.176% for volume, validated against VSLS and telecom-derived counts, enabling province‑wide trend analysis, origin–destination insights (e.g., Port Mann bridge) and a clear path to scale.
