SANDAG, the San Diego Association of Governments, needed a way to plan for significant population growth while still reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a county shaped by suburban development. UrbanFootprint’s platform was used to support regional land use scenario modeling for San Diego’s Sustainable Communities Strategy.

Using UrbanFootprint, Calthorpe Analytics built and modeled alternative land use scenarios that helped SANDAG adopt a more compact, transit-oriented growth plan. The resulting strategy emphasized walkable communities, more housing options, and stronger transit investment, helping San Diego support its emission reduction targets and reduce auto dependency and vehicle miles traveled.
