Laying the Groundwork for an Environmentally Sound and Economically Strong Utah

Envision Utah worked to help the greater Salt Lake City region prepare for rapid population growth while protecting the environment, supporting economic strength, and preserving quality of life. UrbanFootprint, through Calthorpe Analytics, provided scenario planning support to help educate the public and decision-makers about the consequences of different growth and transportation choices.

UrbanFootprint modeled four regional growth scenarios ranging from low-density, auto-oriented development to high-density, transit-oriented growth with more infill and redevelopment. The analysis clearly illustrated community impacts and alternatives, helping lead to a Quality Growth Strategy adopted by the Utah State Legislature in 1999. The strategy has since guided regional and local decisions and helped promote land, water, and air conservation, improved transportation, and better housing choices.
