Case Study: Honolulu achieves sustainable transit-oriented growth with UrbanFootprint

A UrbanFootprint Case Study

Preview of the Honolulu Case Study

Honolulu - Customer Case Study

Honolulu faced severe traffic congestion, growing auto-dependency, housing affordability pressures, and concerns about climate change, energy, and land consumption as it planned a new rail line on Oahu. UrbanFootprint, working with Calthorpe Analytics, helped evaluate transit-oriented development (TOD) options along the planned corridor using scenario modeling tools including UrbanFootprint and RapidFire.

UrbanFootprint supported multiple TOD and transit investment scenarios to measure impacts on land conservation, energy and water use, transportation, greenhouse gas emissions, fiscal effects, housing mix, and affordability. The analysis showed that a business-as-usual growth path would consume three times as much land and far more resources than transit-focused alternatives, helping Honolulu see that walkable, transit-oriented communities could better support public health and preserve the island’s environment.
