City of San Diego Enhances Community Plan Updates with UrbanFootprint

The City of San Diego, California’s second-largest city with about 1.4 million residents, needed a more efficient way to manage land use analysis and scenario planning for its many community plan updates. With five to seven updates in progress at a time across 52 planning areas, the City was looking for a technology-enabled approach to support its Community Plan Update program. UrbanFootprint provided the data, analytics, and scenario planning capabilities used in this effort.

Using UrbanFootprint’s California Civic program and robust data library, the City of San Diego can examine existing conditions in minutes and quickly test the impacts of land use scenarios on emissions, vehicle-miles traveled, accessibility, risk, resilience, and household costs. The solution helps the Planning Department improve and streamline planning workflows while supporting sustainable, equitable growth conversations. While no specific numeric outcome was reported, UrbanFootprint enabled a more cost-efficient, data-driven planning process for future community plan updates, including Mira Mesa.
