Evergy faced the challenge that traditional demand response programs only reached a limited number of enrolled customers, restricting their capacity to manage critical grid peaks. To address this limitation, the utility partnered with vendor Uplight and ecobee to develop a new solution.

Uplight implemented an opt-out Grid Resiliency program that dispatches all ecobee thermostats in Evergy's service territory during critical summer and winter peaks, while maintaining customer comfort with clear notifications. This solution delivered significant results, achieving a 23 MW peak load reduction and increasing Evergy's dispatchable capacity by 31% during summer events.
