Consumers Energy Helps Customers Weather Winter with Offer Center

Consumers Energy, which provides natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million customers in Michigan, faced cold winters and rising gas and electricity prices that strained household budgets. To help vulnerable customers beyond the $7.25M in bill assistance in winter 2022/2023, Consumers Energy partnered with Uplight to deliver free smart thermostats via Uplight’s Offer Center (zero-dollar Google Nest thermostats).

Using Uplight’s Offer Center, Consumers Energy ran a frictionless program with a quick eligibility check, no credit-card required, and free shipping; launched in December 2022, it exceeded the 30,000 giveaway goal with 37,000 forecast by March 31, 2023, and a single February 2 email drove over 6,000 thermostats given away in one day. The campaign enabled enrollment in demand-response for dual-fuel customers and delivered potential bill savings (Nest studies show roughly 10–15% average savings), demonstrating Uplight’s platform achieved strong customer reach and measurable energy-cost impact.
