A Upland Software Case Study
Upland Mobile Messaging partnered with the Wendy Davis for Governor campaign in 2014 to help reach and mobilize voters across Texas. Facing the challenge of building a statewide mobile list from scratch in a largely Republican state, the campaign needed innovative ways to register, engage and turn out typically underrepresented midterm voters—especially college students and Spanish-speaking communities.
Using Upland’s SMS platform the campaign executed four tactics: campus-specific opt-in keywords and Tell‑a‑Friend recruiting, field-oriented text tools and vote‑plan reminders (including MyTexasVotes.com), full Spanish-language messaging, and candidate-driven text calls-to-action. In three months these efforts produced tens of thousands of subscribers, with one candidate CTA producing a 12% immediate spike and a 97% week-over-week subscription increase, one-third of student subscribers using Tell‑a‑Friend (40% of invites accepted), and strong automated GOTV activation across the state.
