Tumblr - Customer Case Study

Tumblr mobilized its user base in November 2011 to fight proposed U.S. internet-censorship bills (PIPA and SOPA) and faced the challenge of quickly generating large-scale constituent contact to influence legislators. The goal was to give ordinary users an easy, immediate way to call their Representatives and make a measurable impact on the debate.

Tumblr launched a Protect the Net page and used Upland Mobile Messaging’s mConnect to connect users directly to their Representatives: users entered phone and address, were called immediately, heard a short message from founder David Karp, then were patched through to their Representative. In 14 hours the campaign generated 87,834 calls (over 6,200 per hour), drew widespread media attention, and became a high-profile example of rapid, tech-enabled civic engagement.
