The Nature Conservancy, led by Mobile Manager Ethan Kearns, needed to dramatically grow its mobile contact list after missing aggressive 2015 targets (aiming for 15,000 but ending at 8,000). The team was hesitant to add more fields to online forms for fear of hurting conversion rates, yet needed a way to increase mobile subscribers and donor value.
After analyzing donor data and finding that supporters with mobile numbers gave significantly more, they made phone numbers a required field on opt-in and pledge forms. That single change added about 25,000 mobile numbers in one month and grew the list from roughly 5,000 to over 43,000 (about an 800% increase) with no drop in conversion rates.
