League of Conservation Voters - Customer Case Study

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a nonprofit that turns environmental values into public policy. Facing historically low midterm turnout, LCV needed a way to educate supporters about voting options, recruit volunteers, and drive people to the polls during the 2014 midterm elections.

LCV ran a targeted SMS "Make a Plan to Vote" campaign that surveyed voters about how they planned to vote, solicited volunteers in key districts, and sent polling-place reminders on the eve of and on Election Day. The campaign generated a 15% response rate to the initial survey, 53 volunteer pledges (with three volunteers completing shifts), 600+ polling-place lookups, more than 250 confirmed early votes and polling information for over 2% of their list; it also introduced a campaign-specific opt-out to protect the broader subscriber base. Overall, the SMS effort successfully educated supporters, boosted turnout efforts and produced lessons for future mobile engagement.
