The NHL’s iOS and Android app offers fans live game updates, team content, and in-app purchases for NHL GameCenter LIVE™ so they can watch out-of-market games. Their challenge was to increase mobile revenue by promoting GameCenter LIVE™ subscriptions throughout the hockey season and reaching the right fans at the right time.
Using Localytics’ app marketing and analytics platform, the NHL ran branded, targeted in‑app messaging based on user profiles (subscription status, country, favorite team) and continuously A/B tested creative. The campaigns influenced nearly 20% of in‑app GameCenter LIVE™ subscriptions; one test showed the “Buy Now” CTA drove 43% more clicks and a 50% higher conversion rate, and tablet users clicked in‑app messages more than twice as often as phone users.
